Biography and commentary:

Born in 1946 in New York, Carmine Appice is one of the most inventive creators of the American rock drumming and is considered by some scholars as the true founder of the Heavy Metal drumming, a few years before John Bonham (Vanila Fudge: 1967). The truth is that his creative approach is naturally different from that of John (although he is also inspired by him in his teaching method). Among the specialties developed by Carmine, we can quote the flams with the hands alternated with the bass drum, the rolls with 3 and 4 limbs with a great complexity in the structure ("Linear Drumming"), the alternating double bass drum unisson with cymbals hits with the hands alone in single stroke rolls, the ruffs, asymmetric measures, ghost notes, single paradiddles with right hand in unison with the right foot or in independence (like Mitch Mitchell or Jack Dejohnette ). Carmine is also a pioneer in the pedagogy of rock drumming (and funk in fact) with a full of ingenuity method ("Realistic Rock": 1972, increased in 2001 ("Ultimate")), which details all specialties today fairly standard in the genre. His method has received numerous awards and was used by the great Dave Weckl in person. A must for rockers, jazz-rockers and metalheads worthy of the name. His method is now demonstrated by himself on video. His younger brother Vinnie, is known for his participation in one of the first heavy metal bands: Black Sabbath.
